Camellia sasanqua
Like its relative, Camelia Japonica, the Sasanqua is a small tree or shrub native to both China and Japan. But this species blooms in the fall and winter rather than in the spring.
Cortaderia -Pampas Grass
Pampas Grass is a fast growing grassy perennial native to South America which produces showy white (ocassionaly pink) plume-like blooms in the summer. Pampas Grass can grow to a height of 8 to 12 feet and 10 feet wide.
Cycas - Sago Palm
Cycas revoluta, sago palm & king sago, is a species of gymnosperm in the family Cycadaceae, native to southern Japan. This very symmetrical plant supports a crown of shiny, dark green leaves on a thick shaggy trunk that is typically about 8 in. in diameter, sometimes wider. The trunk is very low in young plants, but lengthens in height as it ages. It can grow into very old specimens with over 20 feet of trunk. However, the plant is very slow-growing requiring about 50–100 years to achieve this height. Trunks can branch several times, thus producing multiple heads of leaves.
Gardenia jasmoidoides - Cape Jasmine
Gardenia jasminoides, commonly known simply as gardenia or cape jasmine, is an evergreen flowering plant with leathery, glossy leaves. It is native to parts of South-East Asia. Wild plants can range from about 1 to 10 feet in height, higher being more common. Gardenia's showy white blooms are very fragrant. In frost free areas the plant can be ever-blooming but in areas with normal frosty winters it usually blooms only in the spring.
Gardenia radicans - Dwarf Gardenia
As the common name implies, this gardenia’s habit is low and spreading with a dwarf habit. The showy white flowers have the same heady fragrance as the parent plant but are much smaller.
Hydrangea macrophylla - Garden Hydrangea
Hydrangea macrophylla, also called French hydrangea and Bigleaf hydrangea, is a deciduous shrub prized for its large, colorful, summer-blooming ball-shaped flowers. Bigleaf Hydrangea typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall, and has about the same width. Plants produce clusters of large, generally elliptical dark-green leaves. Hydrangea macrophylla is native to China, Japan, and to Central and South America.
Ilex cornuta - Dwarf Burford Holly or Needlepoint Holly
'Dwarf Burford' Holly, also known as Burdordii Nana, is a I. cornuta cultivar. It is an evergreen shrub that shares many characteristics of the 'Burfordii' cultivar, but is smaller and more compact in form. 'Dwarf Burford' is commonly used as a specimen or planted in small groups or used as a hedge. Female 'Dwarf Burford' plants are parthenocarpic (able to produce fruit without pollination), grow rapidly, and are easily transplanted. The red berries and beautiful evergreen leaves persist through winter, giving it a great winter interest in a landscape. It is a great selection for the south because once established it withstands heat and some drought. The shrub is fast-growing and, dense, and can grow up to 9 or 10 feet.
The Needlepoint Holly variety is a similar plant with many of the same characteristics and mature size.
Ilex vomitoria - Dwarf Yaupon Holly
'Dwarf' (synonym 'Nana') is a dwarf cultivar of yaupon holly. It is a woody, perennial, broadleaf evergreen shrub or tree in the holly family, native to the eastern United States and Mexico. Dwarf yaupon is a compact, rounded shrub with small leaves that grows 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide.
Loropetalum rubrum - Chinese Fringe Flower
Loropetalum is an evergreen shrub in the witch hazel family that features ruby-red new growth in spring, which darkens to a deep burgundy color by autumn. Bright pink clusters of fringe-shaped flowers appear in the spring. The plant has a rounded habit growing eventually to 5 feet tall and wide.
Michelia figo - Banana Shrub (Magnolia fuscata)
Banana shrubs (Magnolia figo; formerly Michelia figo) are drought tolerant, evergreen shrubs with beautiful, creamy yellow flowers, which are edged in purple and look like miniature Southern magnolia blooms but smell like bananas. This shrub has a medium rate of growth up to 10 feet tall, but then they grow more slowly and eventually reach 15 or 20 feet tall. The mature growth habit of banana shrubs ranges from an upright oval to more rounded form. Although they will grow in full shade to full sun, the foliage may become more yellow green if planted in excessive sunlight. If grown in partial shade, this shrub will maintain a dense, thick form and will flower more profusely.
Nerium - Oleander
Oleander is a rapidly growing evergreen, rounded shrub or small tree native to Europe and Asia. It grows to heights between 6.5 feet and 20 feet tall and 6 feet to 10 feet wide. The plant is a bit frost tender, doing best in USDA plant zone 8 and higher. ALL PARTS OF THIS PLANT ARE HIGHLY TOXIC AND CAN BE FATAL TO HUMANS IF INGESTED EVEN IN MODERATE QUANTITIES.
Osmanthus fragrans - Sweet Olive, Fragrant tea olive
Fragrant tea olive is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with a dense habit in the Oleaceae (olive) family and native to Asia. This plant typically grows to a height of 10 to 20 feet and has tiny, white, but extremely fragrant flowers that appear in the spring and sporadically in the fall.
Raphiolepsis - Indian Hawthorne
Indian hawthorn is a dense, rounded, mounding broadleaf evergreen shrub, native to China, that grows 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide. In the spring, small somewhat fragrant white or pink flowers are born on panicles that cover the shrub. Dark berries appear after flowering and persist through the winter months. Birds and small mammals are attracted to the fruit. The leaves are leathery, oblong, alternate, serrate, and appear whorled at the ends of the stems. Initially, they emerge as bronze colored and transition to deep green. It is a member of the Rosaceae or rose family.
Trachelospermum - Confederate Jasmine
Trachelospermum jasminoides is an evergreen woody liana easily growing to 10 feet high. The white fragrant flowers, which are borne in spring to early summer, are white, 3/8–3/4 in. diameter, with a tube-like corolla opening out into five petal-like lobes. It is widely planted in California and also particularly in the Southeastern United States, where its hardiness is normally USDA Zones 8–10. Confederate Jasmine is a vigorous grower, if left untended can be invasive, easily outgrowing its intended growing area.
